It may already be evident looking at the snow that’s still on the ground in Kelowna, but a delayed spring is expected for Kelowna according to the forecast.
The Weather Network has released their spring forecast following record low temperatures across the province. Doug Gillham, a meteorologist with The Weather Network, says that spring will be "delayed but not denied."
He says “hang in there,” because it may be a bit colder going into early April, but things will warm up.
“Obviously spring will come, but we’re forecasting colder than normal temperatures, especially during the first half of spring,” Gillham says.
By mid-April, we are expected to get back into more seasonal temperatures, but until then, expect an extended ski season.
Although we may not like the chillier weather, Gillham says it’s not the worst thing for the area with the preliminary summer forecast being what it is.
“It’s good news to continue to build a snowpack in the alpine areas. It’s good for delaying the start of the wildfire season,” says Gillham. He adds that the summer is shaping up to be warmer and potentially drier than normal, similar to last summer, which is a concern for wildfire season.
“We’ll take any moisture we can get during the spring,” he says.
Looking at this week, the forecast shows things warming up slightly, although some mixed precipitation and scattered flurries could be in store for Kelowna.
