Kelowna surpasses 26-year-old temp record on Saturday as hot weather persists

The weekend got off to a sunny start in parts of BC and for some communities, it was a day for the record books.

In total, 10 areas across the province broke temperature records on Saturday, including a pair of Okanagan communities.

A new daily maximum was just barely passed in Kelowna as the area felt a high of 32.8℃ on Sept. 7, 0.1℃ warmer than the previous high set in 1998.

Vernon also set a new temperature record on Saturday as the municipality experienced a high of 32.5℃, also 0.1℃ warmer than the previous benchmark set in 1998.

Other temperature records that were broken on Saturday:

  • Blue River area (32.0℃) - old record of 31.8℃ set in 1998
  • Clinton area (29.9℃) - old record of 29.6℃ set in 2011
  • Puntzi Mountain area (31.6℃) - old record of 28.7℃ set in 2011
  • Sparwood area (30.1℃) - old record of 28.6℃ set in 2006
  • Squamish area (32.2℃) - old record of 30.0℃ set in 2011
  • Tatlayoko Lake area (31.0℃) - old record of 29.5℃ set in 1981
  • Whistler area (32.0℃) - old record of 31.3℃ set in 2011
  • Williams Lake area (29.2℃) - old record of 28.0℃ set in 1981
