Heavy rain expected along Coquihalla, bringing increased risk of landslides and washouts

There’s expected to be heavy rainfall along the Coquihalla Highway this weekend.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement that covers the road from Hope to Merritt.

The rain will begin today, the statement explains, and ease by Sunday morning.

Between 30 and 60 millimetres of rain are expected.

That’s alongside “gusty winds,” the forecaster warned.

The storm could lead to swollen rivers, increased risk of washouts and landslides, power outages and water pooling on roads.

“A strong fall storm system will direct an atmospheric river towards the South Coast, bringing rain to the region,” the statement reads. “Rain will begin today and ease by Sunday morning.”

The department added: “Ahead of the storm, ensure that drains are clear of leaves and debris and secure loose objects.”
