Drivers warned 80 mm of rain could fall along Hwy 1, while snow expected on Hwy 3

If you’re planning a road trip this weekend, you might want to reconsider.

Alongside the atmospheric river set to batter the coast and rainfall due on the Coquihalla, Hwy 1 and Hwy 3 are also in for some rough weather.

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning about Hwy 1 between Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass, with up to 80 millimetres of rain falling.

It said the stretch of road is expected to see a “long episode of rain, at times heavy,” starting this afternoon.

The department said it will likely persist till Sunday night.

Potential hazards as a consequence of the rain could include an increased chance of washouts and landslides.

Environment Canada added: “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

Along Hwy 3, meanwhile, a snowfall warning has been issued.

It affects the highway between Paulson Summit and Kootenay Pass.

Up to 15 centimetres could fall between this evening and Saturday morning, Environment Canada’s bulletin explains.

The snow will then turn into rain.

“Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations,” the department said. “Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.”
