The third time’s a charm, at least for the Calgary Stampeders.
Having lost the last two Grey Cups, including a heartbreaker at the hands of the Ottawa Redblacks two years ago, the Stamps got some revenge on Sunday.
They beat the Redblacks 27-16 at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton to claim the 106th Grey Cup on their biggest rival’s home turf.
Bo Levi Mitchell, who won the CFL’s most outstanding player this season, added to his trophy collection with the game’s MVP award.
B.C. native Lemar Durant was named top Canadian.
"It's huge, it's like a 100-pound weight lifted off me," Durant said after the game. "Growing up, all you want to do is be a champion and to have those chances and let them slip out of your hands and think like you might not get a shot at this.”
Durant had a touchdown catch in the second quarter that made it 14-3 Stampeders after the extra point.
He added three other catches for a total of 30 yards and had a 22-yard rush in the game as well.
Special teams was also a big factor in Calgary’s big win on Sunday, as Terry Williams returned a Richie Leone punt 97 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds of the first half.
That seemed to be the difference, as it made it 21-11 and the Stamps never looked back.
Calgary will be looking to defend their title on home turf in 2019, as the 107th Grey Cup game will be played at McMahon Stadium in one years time.
