Canadians advance to knockout stage in first Copa América appearance

Canada's first-ever trip to the Copa América tournament has been extended after the men’s squad held on for a draw against Chile on Saturday, qualifying for the knockout stage.

The Canadians finished second in their group with four points, including a win, a loss and a draw.

The Canadians also got a hand from Argentina as they knocked Peru out of the tournament on Saturday, helping Canada advance to the quarterfinals.

In the first half of the match, which was a scrappy affair, Chile went down to 10 men in the 26th minute after Victor Davila received his second yellow card.

After a tied first half, the Canadians successfully held off a strong push from their foes to hold on for the draw.

Canada is the third invitee in the tournament's history to qualify for the knockout rounds in their Copa América debut.

Next for the Canadians will be a match potentially against Venezuela, Mexico or Ecuador.
