BC Lions, other CFL teams cancel practices amid failed contract negotiations

The BC Lions were among many CFL teams to cancel practices on Sunday after contract negotiations between the league and the CFL Players Union fell through this weekend.

Both sides are looking for a new collective bargaining agreement after the previous one expired. Seven of the nine teams officially entered a work stoppage at 12:01 am.

The Lions were set to practice at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops. They are still currently working out at the facility.

CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrose explained that he was looking forward to the season starting on time. He noted that a new offer has already been presented to the players.

"We know you’re looking forward to a CFL season that starts on time and includes a full schedule of games," said Ambrose. "To get there, we need a new collective agreement with our players, one that creates a new and positive partnership. "

"Today we presented an offer to the CFLPA that will meet this goal. We have communicated this offer directly to players this afternoon. We want to share this information with you, as well."

The league's offer included an $18.9 million league-wide rise in the salary cap, $5.94 million in guaranteed compensation for promotional appearances, the minimum salary would increase to $70,000 in 2023 and $75,000 in 2027, and much more.

Kamloops residents can expect the Lions in the River City until June 2nd. Gym goers should know the fitness studio is closed to the public.
