Rockets rookies shine in loss to Portland Winterhawks

The Kelowna Rockets opened the 2024-25 season at Prospera Place on Friday as they hosted the Portland Winterhawks.

With several key players out of the lineup because of NHL camps, the rookies were in the spotlight as they fought back from a 3-0 deficit before eventually falling 5-3.

The Winterhawks came out of the gate strong and took an early lead five minutes into the opening frame.

After Portland added a goal later in the first period and one in the opening minutes of the second period, the Rockets found themselves down 3-0.

Kelowna’s first goal of the season came off Owen Folstrom’s stick as the 16-year-old netted his first WHL goal at the 11:09 mark of the middle frame.

The Rockets continued to attack the net, potting two more goals in less than three minutes to tie the game, including Levi Benson’s first WHL score.

With the game tied, the Winterhawks regained the lead in the opening minute of the third period and added an insurance goal not long after to seal the 5-3 win.

"I think it was probably the best game we've played up until this point, with the four exhibition games," said Rockets head coach Kris Mallette after the loss.

"I think my biggest concern was our older guys who have to set that standard."

Seven Rockets played in their first WHL game while Kelowna outshot Portland 39-34.

Jari Kykkanen made 29 saves on 34 shots as the veteran netminder began his last dance with the Rockets in a colourful new helmet.

The Rockets are back in action on Friday as they host the Victoria Royals at Prospera Place.
