The Okanagan Rockets need billet host families

The hockey season is right around the corner and one local team is still looking for billet families to host players from outside of Kelowna.

The Okanagan Rockets consist of 15 to 17 year olds that attend high school full time at Okanagan Mission Secondary in Kelowna.

Players participate in team practices on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as dry-land and off-ice training during the week.

It’s a 40 game schedule with 20 home games on Saturday evening and Sunday morning over the course of 10 weekends.

Host families are expected to drive the players to and from home games, but transportation is provided by the team for away games.

Given the team’s demanding schedule, it’s very impractical for players to live outside of the Kelowna area.

“We are seeking community-spirited families to ‘host’ our young players, and give them a supporting environment that help transition them to living away from home, as well as succeed with their daily schedule,” said a statement from the team. “The players on the Okanagan Rockets are elite-level hockey players and are young men with aspirations of continuing their hockey at the next level.”

Host families will be educated as to what is expected both by themselves and the player, and to this extent clear guidelines will be established.

They’ll also have direct and regular contact with the Rockets’ GM, head coach and the players’ parents to ensure household rules and responsibilities are being met.

“Hosting an elite high school athlete is a rewarding and life-changing experience for all involved,” says the team. “Our commitment to you is that we will work tirelessly to ensure players and families have a positive experience.”
