Mail delivery suspended, Hwy 6 still closed due to Slocan Lake Complex wildfires

Canada Post has suspended mail delivery in the Central Kootenays due to several wildfires burning in the region.

On Tuesday, Canada Post issued a red delivery service alert for Argenta and Slocan due to evacuation orders and alerts that have been issued due to the Slocan Lake Complex fires.

“Canada Post continues to put contingency measures in place, assessing the situation and options, to best serve residents of these communities and to keep them connected,” a news release said.

“The safety of our employees is our number one priority.”

Additionally, DriveBC says Highway 6, which runs along Slocan Lake, remains closed.

There are five major wildfires burning in the region and that includes:

  • Nemo Creek wildlife – 4,694 ha

  • Aylwin Creek fire – 637 ha

  • Komonko Creek fire – 2,228 ha

  • Mulvey Creek – 1,098 ha

  • Ponderosa FSR – 671 ha

All five remain classed as being out of control.

The entire Village of Slocan remains under evacuation order due to Mulvey Creek and Ponderosa FSR.

Meanwhile, a little further north, the entire Village of Silverton also remains under evacuation order due to the Aylwin Creek wildfire.

An incident management team and eight helicopters are tending to wildfires in the Slocan Lake complex.

There are 17 pieces of heavy equipment, 11 fallers and two unit crews responding to the Aylwin Creek and Komonko Creek wildfires.

Meanwhile, there are three pieces of heavy equipment, one initial attack crew, four fallers, two single resources and structure protection working on the Ponderosa FSR wildfire burning east of Slocan.

On the west side of the community, there are two unit crews, one initial attack crew, two fallers, five pieces of heavy equipment and structure protection working on the Mulvey Creek fire.
