BC immediately halting import and sale of Russian liquor products

British Columbia has joined a number of other Canadian provinces in putting a stop to the import and sale of Russian liquor in the wake of the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Deputy Premier Mike Farnworth made the announcement this afternoon, saying that the Province is working with Ottawa on how BC can support the coordinated sanctions from the federal government.

"As we stand with those who want to live in peace and against those who commit deplorable and illegal acts of aggression, we have put an immediate halt to the importing and sale of Russian liquor products from our BC Liquor Stores and provincial liquor distribution centres,” Farnworth said.

While it may not seem like a huge step in the grand scheme of things, it’s action that the BC Liberals called for earlier today.

"We should do all we can to support the people of Ukraine and not benefit Putin’s regime while this unprovoked aggression continues," said BC Liberal Leader Kevin Falcon.

"This is a concrete step we can take right now to show our solidarity with the Ukrainian people."

Farnworth also announced that BC is contributing $1 million for the Red Cross to support the people of Ukraine “who are suffering from this illegal act of war.”

He added that BC stands with those who understand that Europe’s peace, after two world wars during the 20th century, depends on respecting international law.
