BC announces plan to revitalize tourism industry

On Friday, the province announced additional support to revitalize BC’s tourism industry and economy.

The province is investing $1 million towards event-bid preparation and sponsorships to attract large-scale arts, culture and sports events, public conferences and exhibitions.

In a news release, the province indicates it has launched a three-year Strategic Framework for Tourism which “outlines a roadmap for a more resilient tourism sector by rebuilding to 2019 levels by 2024.”

This investment is in addition to the $8 million government announced in February to help restart business events, conferences and exhibitions.

Destination BC will be provided with $6 million, starting this year through to 2024, to market BC as a destination of choice in the highly competitive international market.

This also builds on the $570 million that has already been invested in recovery supports for the tourism sector.

Budget 2022 set aside $25 million to destination development, international marketing, business events and conferences recovery, marquee events bids, and tourism training.

“We are very enthused about the province's further investment in tourism recovery,” said Walt Judas, CEO, Tourism Industry Association of BC.

“These funds come at an opportune time as our industry looks to rebuild our workforce, products and service levels to once again welcome guests from all over the world in the months and years ahead."
