B.C. bans tail docking on dogs

Canada currently has no federal law banning cosmetic surgery on pets, but it will no longer be allowed in B.C.

The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC) have voted 91.5 per cent in favour of banning the cosmetic tail docking of dogs, horses and cattle.

</who> Tail docking is common practice on purebred schnauzers

“Tail docking is commonly performed on purebred show dogs like boxers, pitbulls, and schnauzers when breeders want the tail docked purely for cosmetic reasons,” said Dr. Oz of Rose Valley Veterinary Hospital.

The Kelowna Kennel Club, who’s website states is ‘dedicated to the sport of purebred dogs’ refused to comment on the story.

“Tail docking is mostly for show breeding purposes, it’s not necessary and can lead to chronic infection or other health issues,” said Dr. Oz.

</who> Boxer's often have their ears cropped and tails docked for dog shows.

The decision brings B.C. in line with other Canadian provinces like P.E.I., Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia who have banned tail docking and ear cropping.

“Those days when it used to be done for show are over,” expressed Dr. Oz.

What do you think? Should Canada have a federal ban on cosmetic surgery on pets?
