Asphalt clean-up ordered after truck crashes into Okanagan Lake

A clean-up was ordered after a vehicle crashed into Okanagan Lake near Peachland on the weekend.

According to the BC government, the one-ton flat-deck truck and asphalt sealcoating trailer went into the water in the early morning of Saturday, July 27.

Both “vehicle fluids” and “asphalt material” were later seen in the lake, according to a public bulletin issued by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.

The trailer had a 900-litre storage capacity but was not full when it crashed into the lake.

The ministry said it doesn’t know exactly how much material was spilled, however.

A domestic water intake was identified near the spillage, according to the bulletin, and the owner was notified, alongside Interior Health.

Peachland Fire Department worked with a tow company to get the truck and trailer out of the water and put a boom around the affected area.

“The boom will remain in place until the completion of cleanup and mitigation activities,” the ministry explained.

It added: “The responsible person or spiller is legally required to clean-up or manage the clean-up of a spill.”
