Kelowna band gets recognized in popular UK music magazine
A Kelowna-based band has garnered international attention, and not because of some crazy antics, but purely based on their talent alone.
Progressive-rock outfit Marci’s Beach has been featured alongside acts like Led Zeppelin in the most recent issue of British music magazine, Classic Rock Magazine.
The group’s song “Black Hole” is featured on this issue's compilation CD, in addition to taking up some space inside, with a mini-review.
The band originally began recording the track at Arc House Studio back in December of 2018.
However, due to the unfortunate departure of some members, bassist and lead vocalist Lucas Segall was on his own, finishing the song in June of this year.
Upon completion, Segall shared the song with various user-submitted music channels on Youtube, it is there he assumes it piqued the interest of Classic Rock writer Ken McIntyre.
“I guess this guy must have seen it on the Youtube channel, he reached out to me on Facebook and before I knew it I was signing this contract to have it added to the issue,” said Segall.
“I was super stoked because I used to read that magazine all the time growing up and get excited over the new CD’s because I could learn about new music that way, so it’s kind of full circle.”
While Marci’s Beach sadly announced it’s hiatus a few months ago, the band’s Instagram and Facebook page has been steadily gaining followers since the issue hit shelves and online stores.
“It has been exposing us to an audience that we would have never reached otherwise," said Segall. “I’ve been looking into things and have seen people from the UK, Indonesia and the US checking us out."
Segall says this surreal experience has been nothing short of “gratifying” for him and his bandmates, as he had been trying to get the band some local air time for the last several months.
“I have been bugging local radio stations to play us and they never would, but after all of our hard work to get noticed by a magazine in the UK that sells 50,000 copies a month, is just really gratifying.”
It may be a while before we get a chance to see a Marci’s Beach reunion, but until then we can travel through the cosmos via their intergalactic trip of an EP Welcome to the Fungal.
You can also follow along with Segall’s other musical venture, Pharm, who are equally as rad and just as likely to gain some international attention.
