VIDEO: Local elementary school opens up time capsule from 2000

What would you put in a box today if you knew people would be taking a look 25 years from now?

That's what students and staff at Peter Greer Elementary School pondered a quarter century ago, and today it was time to open the school's time capsule.

For Terry Beaudry and Jody Nelson, who were co-principals during the 1999-2000 school year, it was a great opportunity to connect with the past.

"This has grown and grown over the last couple of months," said Nelson.

"One of our former teachers got us all remembering that this had happened."

"We're meeting community members who were actually students at the time," said Beaudry. "I'm just so thrilled and pleased to be here and reminisce with the community."

Current students, past students, faculty and district officials looked on while Teacher/Librarian Bonnie Alguire pulled out things like Pokemon cards, the original Harry Potter book, and letters from students about their hopes and dreams.

It was Alguire's idea back in 1999 to create the capsule.

"The Y2K was such a big deal and everybody was doing millennium time capsules so I thought it would be really fun to put everything into a big treasure chest time capsule and open it up in 25 years."

So Alguire went into the day knowing what was inside.

"If I can remember," she said, with a laugh.

But a bigger thrill than the time capsule itself was the people who came together for it.

"It's so exciting to see all the kids. Like I just ran into Zack and he brought his three kids," said Alguire.

For current-day Vice Principal Tracy Kuzik, it was the letters they wrote about their futures that were most revealing.

"Pilots, princesses...." listed Kuzik.

"I love the energy and the innocence of students then," she said.

"What they were excited about was so different."

Now, the school is planning to stuff a new time capsule that won't be opened until 2050.
