Supportive housing under construction in Kelowna

Construction has begun on 46 units of supportive housing in Kelowna.

The modular housing, located at 1642 Commerce Ave., will have 24/7 support service and is expected to be done before the coming winter.

"We understand that shelter providers in Kelowna are experiencing significant pressure from high occupancy rates, and many of their clients are dealing with mental-health and addiction issues," said Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

"These new homes will alleviate some of that pressure, and provide much-needed access to support programs that will help these people reclaim their lives."

The new homes will offer those who are experiencing or at the risk of homelessness the stable home they need, allowing them to focus on other areas in their lives.

Five of the 46 homes will also be wheelchair accessible to accommodate those with disabilities.

The around-the-clock support will include meal programs, life and employment skills training, health and wellness support services and opportunities for volunteer work.

"This is an important step on our journey to address homelessness in Kelowna,” said Mayor Colin Basran on Friday morning.

“The city has a long, successful relationship with BC Housing, having collaborated on many transitional and long-term housing projects over the last decade to house single men, women, families and seniors."

Horizon North Modular Solutions will be handling the construction and, upon completion, the building will be operated by the John Howard Society.

The Province has also purchased a second property in Kelowna, at 2025 Agassiz Rd., for another proposed supportive housing project.

KelownaNow will have more coverage of this announcement as the day goes on.
