A Kelowna driver was recently busted by police going nearly three times the posted speed limit as they drove by an elementary school.
The incident happened around 11:30 am on Monday, June 17, as Kelowna RCMP officers were conducting speed enforcement in the school zone in front of Raymer Elementary.
According to police, the vehicle in question was recorded by laser at 88 km/h, which is 58 km/h over the posted 30 km/h school zone speed limit.

The driver received a $368 fine for excessive speeding and had their vehicle towed away to be impounded for seven days.
“By driving at a safe speed and distance, you give yourself more time to stop,” explained Sgt. Colby Attlesey with Kelowna Municipal Traffic.
“As per the RoadSafetyBC website, a pedestrian hit at 30km/h has a 90% chance of surviving. A pedestrian hit at 50km/h has an 80% chance of being killed. Please slow down and obey the speed limits.”
School zones will remain in effect in Kelowna until essentially the Canada Day long weekend, as the final day of school isn’t until Thursday, June 27.
However, this particular driver would have been speeding either way, as the speed limit on streets around Raymer Elementary is 50 km/h.
In fact, the driver was going so fast through the school zone that they still would have been just 2 km/h away from an excessive speeding ticket if school wasn’t in session that day.
