City seeks federal funding to landscape Glenmore Recreation Park

The City of Kelowna is looking to secure a federal grant to help landscape Glenmore Recreation Park.

Next week staff from the city’s partnership office will be looking for council’s support to apply to the Growing Canada’s Community Canopies Grant.

The grant is a $291 million funding program that is meant to support the planting of at least 1.2 million trees across the country.

If successful, the grant money would support the planting of over 300 trees and shrubs in the Glenmore Recreation Park, which is located at 289 Valley Rd.

“The project's plan includes providing soil, mulch, and irrigation to supply the growing conditions trees will need to mature,” the staff report says.

“The added trees will provide increased aesthetics, shade, and comfort for park users and wildlife habitat.”

Construction on the fifth phase of the park started last summer and is expected to continue throughout 2025.

That includes the construction of entry plazas, a fitness area, tennis and pickleball courts, a temporary washroom and grass field.

Work in 2026 will include the construction of a volleyball area, a splash park, playground, activity centre, basketball courts, cricket pitch and a skate area.
