City of Kelowna seeks input on climate resilience, urban forest strategies

The City of Kelowna is seeking public input on the Climate Resilient Kelowna Strategy and the Sustainable Urban Forest Strategy.

Residents are invited to complete a survey and to attend one of three open houses being hosted before the public engagement wraps up on June 9.

“Both strategies are based on previous community engagement, research on best practices and approaches used by other jurisdictions, as well modelling and analysis,” says Chris Ray, Climate Action and Environment Manager, in a news release.

“The public are invited to have their say to inform if the recommended actions will help meet the goals of each strategy.”

According to the release, the climate resilient strategy outlines actions the city will take to reduce community greenhouse gas emissions by 40% below 2007 levels by 20230.

The city says there are 10 “key drivers” where the biggest change can be made with 28 strategies to achieve them.

Ray says that the city’s urban forests plays an essential role in climate resilience and that is why the city is developing the two strategies alongside one another.

The new forestry strategy will serve as a comprehensive plan to manage the city’s urban future now and into the future.

According to the release, there are four goals in the strategy and 10 strategies to achieve them.

By completing a survey, residents are entered to win one of two hanging baskets or one of two promo codes for 240 free minutes on the city’s e-scooters or e-bikes.

Surveys and more information, including how to register for an open house, can be found at this link for the Climate Resilient Kelowna Strategy and here at this link for the Sustainable Urban Forest Strategy.
