Members of the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) are feeling a “deep sadness” after the death of the group's first certified canine.
Chase joined COSAR five years ago along with his handler, Terry Downs, and received his validation as a search and rescue dog in 2021.
Chase was the group’s first certified search and rescue K9 member and “played an important role in dozens of searches in the Okanagan and around the province,” according to a social media post by the group.
Less than two weeks on the job in 2021, Chase helped locate a missing elderly patient who had walked away from Kelowna General Hospital and was suffering from hypothermia.
On top of his “thousands of hours of training,” Chase represented COSAR at local events and school visits.
“Chase had an immense presence within the team,” explained the Facebook post.
“Not only did he bring an important skill set to the team on searches, he was always there with a wagging tail, bringing smiles and comfort to teammates when times were tough.”
Being COSAR’s first certified K9 member, Chase laid the groundwork for the team’s K9 program while setting a high standard for other dogs, including his brother Barrett, who will follow in Chase’s footsteps.
“Thank you, Chase, for all that you brought to the team and the community,” added the post.
“You will be missed but not forgotten. Rest easy, your watch is over.”
