In the second episode of Get Local with Genesis, host Jon Kot of Genesis Kelowna catches up with NHL legend Duncan Keith for a laid-back conversation over a delicious meal at Derrick's Steakhouse. As the two settle in at the newly popular Kelowna restaurant, they talk about life after hockey, Keith’s passion for coaching, and the strong bonds he’s built over his career.
Since retiring, Keith has been focused on coaching his son, Colton, as he prepares for provincials. “All the kids are excited,” he shares, adding that the competition will be tough, especially with familiar rivals from Kelowna in the mix. While his days on the ice as a pro are behind him, Keith still follows the game closely, watching Edmonton Oilers games whenever he can and staying connected with the team through former colleagues like Bob Nicholson.
The conversation naturally shifts to Keith’s incredible career, which includes three Stanley Cup wins, two Norris Trophies, and an Olympic gold medal. When asked about his proudest achievement, he reflects on the bonds he formed in Chicago. “It’s those relationships, those memories with the guys I played with my whole career,” he says, highlighting the lasting friendships he maintains with former teammates.
As they enjoy their meal, restaurant owner Ross Derrick joins the conversation, sharing the story of how Derrick’s Steakhouse came to be. With a background in the restaurant industry and a passion for quality dining, he saw an opportunity to bring a high-end steakhouse to Kelowna. He and his team carefully source their beef from High River and Enderby, ensuring top-tier quality for every dish. “I believe High River has some of the best beef in the world,” Derrick notes. The restaurant also prides itself on its classic approach, offering tableside Caesar salads and meticulously crafted French onion soup, adding to the upscale dining experience.
The night ends on a high note, with a round of expertly crafted cocktails and a sneak peek at the restaurant’s newest drink creation. As Keith and Kot toast to a great evening, it’s clear that this episode of Get Local with Genesis isn’t just about hockey or fine dining—it’s about celebrating the connections that make Kelowna special. Whether it’s the camaraderie of a championship-winning team or the passion behind a thriving local business, these stories remind us why community matters.
