There’s been a lot of attention focused lately on the new Bertram overpass, which was lifted into place over Harvey Avenue earlier this month.
It’s expected to open to the public in December and will instantly become a safer route across Hwy 97 for pedestrians and cyclists.
And while the bridge currently connects the Central Green residential area to downtown, it will soon be in the middle of Kelowna’s newest active transportation corridor (ATC).
The City of Kelowna has now unveiled the route for the future Bertram ATC, which will connect the Sutherland and Cawston ATCs once complete.
“This new all ages and abilities connection will fill a network gap through Kelowna’s downtown and will provide cyclists better access to destinations such as adjacent commercial areas, new growth like the Downtown UBCO Campus and the waterfront,” says Kamil Rogowski, a City transportation engineer.
The Bertram ATC will include a multiuse path along Richter Street and through Rowcliffe Park on the south side of the new Bertram overpass.
To the north, it will feature a two-way bike line, upgrades at intersections, landscaping and new trees.
Residents are being invited to review the Bertram ATC design and share their feedback with the City online until Nov. 6.
There will also be an in-person information session at City Hall from 4-7 pm on Thursday, Oct. 24, for those who want to meet with the project team to discuss the new route.
