Starbright Children’s Development Centre has been a vital part of Kelowna for almost 60 years, making a lasting impact on children under 6 with developmental challenges.
The Centre provides specialized therapy and programs to help these children reach their potential, and its influence is evident in the stories of the families it serves.
Jason Picklyk, a firefighter with the City of Kelowna and President of the Kelowna Professional Firefighters’ Association, has always been committed to community service. His journey with Starbright began when he was introduced to the Centre by Kelowna City Councillor Mohini Singh, whose daughter had benefited greatly from the Centre’s services years before.
Jason quickly understood Starbright’s mission and the critical role it plays in the lives of local families. After learning about Starbright and meeting with doctors and therapists, Jason saw the impact of early intervention for children with developmental delays.
“When Mohini spoke about the Centre and what it does, I knew I had to help,” says Jason. “I saw how critical it was to support Starbright and the children it serves.”
Alongside Mohini, Jason helped raise funds to ensure Starbright could continue providing vital services, especially as costs for therapy materials and equipment were rising. By connecting with potential donors and inviting them to Starbright to see the work being done, Jason and Mohini raised essential funds.
Through these fundraising efforts, Jason helped bring much-needed specialized equipment to Starbright, including physical therapy tools for children who had mobility challenges, and even helped fund the creation of an outdoor therapeutic playground.
“Seeing Starbright’s connection to the community and how much it means to families and the children made me want to do everything I could to help,” Jason reflects.
His efforts also encouraged the Kelowna Firefighters’ Charitable Society to support Starbright, helping the Centre raise significant funds for its programs.
Dr. Rhonda Nelson, Starbright’s Executive Director, praised Jason’s understanding of the Centre’s importance. “Jason knew what we meant to the community and how the provision of the specialized equipment to assist in early intervention therapies and programs for the children could make a huge difference. We were able to do more because of his efforts.”
Jason’s success in fundraising didn’t go unnoticed. He was invited by Carol Meise, the Board President, to join Starbright’s Board of Directors in 2023, where he continues to work closely with other members to strengthen the Centre’s funding channels and plan for the future.
“It’s amazing to be part of an organization with such a deep legacy in this community. I’m proud of the work we’re doing and excited for what’s ahead,” says Jason.
Jason’s commitment has also inspired others in the community to support Starbright’s mission, and his ongoing involvement contributes so much to the Centre’s continued success.
Jason’s story, along with others that highlight the impact of Starbright, is included in the Centre’s newly launched series of books. They share inspiring stories of the families and the children who have been part of Starbright’s journey.
The books are available for viewing on Starbright’s website at www.starbrightokanagan.ca.
