Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I’m from Cape Town, South Africa. I’ve been living in Vancouver for the last few years and have recently moved to Kelowna.

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My husband. I moved across the world with him so I think it’s pretty accurate to say he’s the one I want to spend all my time with. Our shared sense of humour keeps me laughing for days.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Sunshine Market because I get my South African treats from there. Mosaic Books in downtown is also a great place to browse for a good read.

Describe yourself in one word.
Compassionate.

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Hiking the Napali Coast on Kauai, Hawaii. It’s a special place.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Chasing waterfalls. My husband and I enjoy the many trails around Kelowna that lead us to a beautiful waterfall view or swim. We also like trying out new places to eat because we love food.

What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you?
Let’s keep the mystery alive with this question. All I can say is I’m able to laugh about embarrassing moments.

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I am inspired by my work everyday. It’s a privilege to witness people grow, heal and better themselves despite adversity.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Going to a resort called The Wild Coast with my family. It was a paradise for kids. We would always be busy with fun stuff – swimming at the water park, playing arcade games & enjoying yummy treats.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
As an animal lover, I like to volunteer and donate to causes that protect animals. I offer a discounted rate in my counseling practice to students who may be struggling to access therapy. I also try to host workshops on mental health for people looking to inform themselves through psychoeducation.

If you could change one thins in the world what would it be?
More empathy. According to science, empathy is a skill that needs to be taught. This is why it should be taught in schools and the workplace. Empathy means we can be a kinder and more helpful society. It’s also the key to nourishing connections with others, which means less isolation and loneliness within in our communities.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
Knox Mountain to watch the sunset.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Improved access and community care for those living with mental health issues. People do not expect anyone to deal with health issues on their own. Mental health should be no different.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
We have everything you could want – a beautiful lake, mountains, amazing places to eat and plenty of activities to keep busy.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. Travel to explore the world as much as I can.
2. Complete my Ph.D.
3. Learn to snowboard.

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I choose to live close to the water– an ocean or lake.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media? (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.)
Facebook or https://www.rulishachettycounselling.com/

What is the name of your business/organization?
Rulisha Chetty Counselling – located at Ascent Therapy Clinic

Why did you get into/start this business?
I lost a loved one to suicide when I was young. It made me realize how important it is to break the stigma of mental health for those suffering in silence. It also taught me how important our own mental health is and should be prioritized.

What is the goal of your business?
To empower people through therapy.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
I have struggled with homesickness when I first immigrated as we left our families behind but as time went on I’ve embraced Canada as my home and I absolutely love it here now.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
We’re not meant to start all over again. I think mistakes and challenges are important. They are how you learn and grow so I wouldn’t want to change anything.

Lekker! This is an African word to describe something as being ‘fantastic’.or ‘super cool.’

Oprah Winfrey, she has been a long time advocate for mental health.
