Meet Kristina. She has lived in Kelowna her whole life. Hair is her passion; she works at burke hair lounge.
Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
29 years. My whole life.
Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
My boyfriend Johnny. He motivates me to be a better person. He is an amazing and supportive guy! Not to mention he is very good looking ;)
What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Natures Fare. This health food store is the best!! It not only offers local products and produce, but they offer healthy alternatives suitable for any lifestyle!! This place changed my life, maybe it can change yours?
Describe yourself in one word.
Capricorn.
If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Anywhere in Northern Europe, where there would be amazing hiking and breathtaking views!
What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Hiking.
What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
Personally I find inspiration all around me. When I see a person sharing their story of their person struggles and achievements, it inspires me to never give up and keep striving towards my goals. Other hairstylists showing their work and their passions, that inspires me to dig deeper into my creativity. The people I surround myself with, they inspire me everyday.
Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
Playing hairdresser with my babysitter Lindsey. Camping with my family and exploring hikes with my dad. Traveling to the Armstrong fair with my grandparents in their motor home. These are all moments I'll never forget :)
Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
In 2017, I volunteered with HOPE Okanagan and donated all of my December's tips to their organization. This year unfortunately was not so productive with volunteering due to personal reasons. I do however continue to donate to the Kelowna women's shelter.
If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I'd change the worlds relationship it has with money and the strong grasp money seems to hold around so many people.
Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
There is small beach access near my parents place, I go spend time there when I need to clear my head.
Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
There needs to be more accessible parking in downtown Kelowna. We are only getting bigger as a city, and the parking makes it hard for not only the people who work downtown to access but also for people who want to shop downtown. A 2 hour max also makes it difficult for a client to get their hair done if the process requires more then 2 hours. I realize there are parkades but often times the one by my work is packed full after 9 a.m.
What do you think makes Kelowna great?
We have easy access to local farms and food. We also make the most amazing wine!
What are 3 things on your bucket list?
Backpack through Europe
Hike the West Coast Trail
Learn how to rock climb
Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I am really introverted outside of work. Large crowds give me anxiety.
How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Facebook and Instagram
What is the name of your business/organization?
Hair By Kristina Jantz.
Why did you get into/start this business?
Hair has always been a passion of mine since I was a little girl. With the help of certain individuals and opportunities, I decided it was time to become my own boss. That was over 2.5 years ago and I wouldn't change a thing!
What is the goal of your business?
Right now all I want is for me to have balance in my schedule and keep myself healthy so I can give my 100% to my clients.
What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
My biggest struggle when it comes to work would be saying "no" and maintaining a healthy work/life balance and taking the time needed for self care and self love. It's not cool to work yourself to the bone. Money is not everything.
If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I wouldn't change a thing.
What do you always find yourself saying?
Gotta keep it fresh.
Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Comparison kills the spirit. We often are mega influenced by social media and we forget the truth in our own beauty and individuality. We all have the power within us to make our lives however we dream them to be. Never give up.
If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
One of my best friends Calandra. She moved away and we don't see each other anymore. I miss her dearly.
Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
It supports our local economy. I love shopping for local organic produce and supporting local art.
What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Taking control of my health.
Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
My dear friend Jenn Komar and her vintage clothing business @jakstylevintage. She is a young entrepreneur, like myself and also has wicked fashion style!
My choice for the KelownaNow In Focus spotlight is:
Jenn Komar
