In Focus | Christie Armstrong

Meet Christie. Christie has lived in Kelowna for 17 years. She is passionate about her profession and her community.

Where are you from and how long have you lived in Kelowna?
I'm originally from Prince George, but have been in Kelowna for 17 years!

Who is your favourite person to spend time with and why?
I don't think I can narrow this down to just one person - I have incredible friends here that I love spending time with. If I could only choose two, it would be my nephews Liam and Michael.

What is your favourite local store in Kelowna and why?
Mosaic Books. I love independent bookstores, and this one has it all. Knowledgeable staff, great selection, cozy atmosphere.

Describe yourself in one word.
Conscientious

If you could go anywhere in the world right at this moment where would you go and why?
Italy or Mykonos... hopefully cell phone and laptop free.

What is your favourite activity in Kelowna?
Hiking Knox Mountain any time of year, and the occasional beach day on one of the little beach accesses off of Abbot (with a book and a lot of sunscreen).

What is the most inspiring thing that has happened to you?
I've been fortunate to have some incredible people in my life who really believed in me and gave me the extra push I needed at times to take some personal and professional risks (Cal McCarthy, Grant Mackney, Dean Clarke, and Paul Biro). Knowing that others saw potential in me was incredible, and as a result I've had some amazing experiences helping others achieve their dreams in the music business, and pull off some great events with my current team.

Tell us your favourite childhood memory.
When I was 10 years old my mom, brother, and I moved from Vancouver to Prince George to be closer to some extended family. During the drive we stopped in 100 Mile House at Dairy Queen for ice cream. Going through the drive thru my mom just said '3 chocolate dipped cones', without asking either of us kids what we wanted. I immediately quipped 'And what would you kids like?' - which my brother and I thought was hilarious. Mom found it less amusing, but I've always been a little sassy. All three of us still laugh about it.

Where do you volunteer or give back to in the community?
I'm not as involved as I like, but I really believe in the work done by the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club, the Kelowna Food Bank and the Gospel Mission. Anything we can do in this community to help others is a win in my book, especially when these groups are working to serve the most basic needs (food, shelter, etc.)

If you could change one thing in the world what would it be?
I would love to see people treat each other with kindness and compassion first and foremost... it's ok to be a bit different and I think we should embrace the differences rather than fear them.

Where would you sneak away to in Kelowna to spend some time alone?
The patio at Giobean Cafe with a great cappuccino and a good book.

Where would you like to see positive change in Kelowna and why?
Traffic, ugh.

What are 3 things on your bucket list?
1. See more of the world
2. Improve my French speaking skills
3. Learn some sort of craft / art skill like knitting or watercolor painting

Tell us something that not everyone may know about you.
I fell off a waterfall when I was 16 (and landed in a pool of water at the base - I'm fine). It's a story best told in person, with sound effects and appropriate hand gestures.

How do people connect with you, personally, through social media?
Instagram or via LinkedIn

What is the name of your business/organization?
SW Event Technology / Showtime Event & Display (sister companies)

Why did you get into/start this business?
I've been with the company since 2001, aside from a couple of brief stints working in the music industry.

What is the goal of your business?
We are an event production company, providing all kinds of solutions from LED Video Walls and Sound Systems at festivals like Centre of Gravity, to full tradeshow services at events like Craft Culture's annual Holiday Market.

What has been your biggest struggle either at work or in life?
Work-life balance is always a struggle in this industry! Long hours, days and weeks away from home. It can feel like you are always trying to catch up on one or the other. Thankfully I have a great team at work, and patient friends at home.

If you could start all over again would you do things the same or would things be different?
I wouldn't change anything, because I like how it's all turned out so far. All the bumps and twists in the road make it that much better.

What do you always find yourself saying?
Work with your head up, not down. (my coworkers are sick of that one). Also, 'No Problem!' and 'I baked cookies!'

Tell us your best piece of life advice.
Cut yourself some slack. Life is messy and you're not going to get it all right, so just make the most of it and surround yourself with good people who add to your life.

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select?
Any of my family members - no matter how much time we spend together it's never enough! (we are spread all over BC and Alberta)

Why do you think it is important to shop locally?
Local independent business helps create community. I love that I can walk into a coffee shop and have the owner know my name, I know his, and we can chat about our lives. I'm away a lot with work, so feeling that connection is meaningful when I'm home.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Personally, completing 3 Half Marathons. Professionally, seeing this company grow and succeed over the last 17 years. I believe we have a great corporate culture and a great team.

Give someone you think that deserves it a shout out and explain why!
Ben Pidskalny - we've worked together for years and he's recently become a part owner in the company. He's a busy guy at work and has 3 beautiful kids at home - and every day he comes into work with a smile on his face. I appreciate his positive energy!
