Thousands of students flocked to the UBCO campus on Friday night to kick off the school year at the university's sold out Frosh concert event.
Known for it’s stellar lineups of top acts such as Adventure Club and Classified, fans were not disappointed to learn that Electronic Dance Music Producer, 3LAU would be headlining along rap star Ty Dolla Sign this year.
While attendees eagerly waited for the headliners, they danced to a killer selection of tracks performed by some of Kelowna’s very own DJ’s.

The last local group to come out and hype up the crowd was UBCO’s own, OttoHumour. From intense rap battles, to dancing on stage, these guys knew just what it would take to bring the crowd's excitement to the next level.

At any point before his set if anyone mentioned the name “Ty Dolla Sign” the crowd would lose their minds. You can only imagine the roaring screams and cheers that followed him as he walked out onto the stage.

The juxtaposition between his killer rhymes and surprisingly impressive vocal skills made for a unique sound that the audience loved. Some loved it so much they even tried to jump on stage just to get closer to him, little did they know that he would actually bring more than five ladies on stage to dance with him during his springboard hit, “Work from Home”.

Throughout his entire set Ty Dolla Sign never let the crowd go silent and just when you thought they couldn’t get any louder he leaped off stage into the crowd, surfing his way through and not missing a beat the entire time.

Up next was audience favorite 3LAU, known for playing at staple EDM festivals like Electric Zoo and Life in Colour, it was a pretty big deal for him to play at this event.

3LAU didn’t necessarily get to make the entrance he had hoped for due to some technical difficulties, but that didn’t stop him for giving the crowd what they came for. While waiting to get his sound issues sorted he headed to the front of the stage to chat with the audience.
“You know i’ve been playing at lot of Frosh events lately, but i’ve heard that the BC crowd goes the hardest!” The crowd cheered in agreement and tried prepare themselves for the powerhouse performance that was to come.

Some EDM performers usually have a notorious reputation for staying behind their soundboard and giving an arm wave every once in awhile, 3LAU was the total opposite. He regularly walked out from behind his table to hype up and dance with the crowd, sometimes he even jumped on top of it to give the crowd that extra little boost of energy.

His mixes were on fire as he regularly took some of today’s top hits and made them his own. He also used some music from different genres and decades, at one point he even remixed Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” and surprisingly the entire crowd loved it and sang at the top of their lungs.

The best thing about it was how the event staff made the safety of the attendees a top priority. A number of tent’s were onsite handing out water and food, there was also a “safe space” tent for attendees to go to and relax.
