Meet Andrew of Toncini Modern Italian: A Taste of Italy in the Okanagan

In a recent interview on KelownaNow Live with Jason Mann, Andrew Toncini, founder of Toncini Modern Italian, shared the story behind his passion for authentic Italian cuisine and how he’s bringing the flavours of Italy to the Okanagan region.

Andrew’s culinary journey has taken him from Italy to Australia, and now to Kelowna, where his business has grown in popularity for its personalized dining experiences, meal kits, and catering services.

From Italy to Kelowna: A Culinary Passion

Originally from the Marche region of Italy, Andrew brings a deep love for Italian cooking to his business. He draws inspiration from Italy’s famed bella vita—the beautiful life—by replicating the authentic Italian dining experience here in Kelowna.

After arriving in the Okanagan in 2021, Andrew quickly began making his mark in the local restaurant scene, working in various establishments across the region. By mid-2023, he launched Toncini Modern Italian to pursue his vision of authentic Italian food, bringing a true taste of Italy to local tables.

Private Chef Services: More Than Just a Meal

One of the most unique aspects of Andrew’s service is the personal connection he builds with his clients. When he steps into someone’s home to cook, it’s not just about preparing a meal—it’s about creating an experience. Guests receive restaurant-quality food, but with the added intimacy of having the chef interact and engage with them throughout the evening.

“The kitchen is one of the most private and intimate spaces in the household,” Andrew noted. Being invited into that space allows him to create a personalized experience. Guests are treated not only to exceptional food but also to Andrew’s presence as he serves, interacts, and paces the meal according to the flow of the evening.

“So for the cooking side, we usually bring all our utensils. So from our pots and pans, we do rely on the dishware to be provided from the venue, depending obviously from the size of the party.” Andrew explained.

This flexibility allows him to create restaurant-level dishes in any home kitchen, while ensuring he respects the client’s space. As a bonus, Andrew and his team clean up before leaving, ensuring a stress-free dining experience for the hosts.

Andrew’s favorite dish to create? Lasagna, a recipe passed down from his mother. “It really resonates with me as is one of my favorite recipe that I got from my mother. So for me, it's like, you know, like passing that one along. And this is the one that takes also the longest to put it together.”

Booking Toncini Modern Italian as a private chef is simple. Clients can reach out by phone, email, or through the online booking system, providing details about the event, guest count, and any dietary restrictions. From there, Andrew works with the host to plan the menu and tailor the evening to their preferences.

These kits come with everything needed to replicate a multi-course Italian meal at home, including freshly made pasta, sauces, and desserts like cannoli. “Everything is a one to two steps reheat at your home. So it's taking away that hassle of having to clean and messy your kitchen.” Andrew said. You get high-quality, artisanal ingredients, and "all the boring stuff like chopping and prepping is done for you.”

Meal kits are available for pickup at the Mediterranean Market, or delivery is available for orders over $100. These kits offer a range of options, from handmade pasta to pizza-making kits, providing a fun and delicious way for families and friends to enjoy Italian cuisine at home.

Catering & Pizza Parties

In addition to private dining and meal kits, Andrew offers a range of catering services, from casual pizza parties to formal multi-course dinners. His pizza parties, in particular, have become a favourite for backyard gatherings, where guests can enjoy fresh, hand-stretched pizza straight from the oven.

Before moving to Canada, Andrew’s culinary journey began in Australia, where he and his brother launched their first food truck. This humble start eventually led to a restaurant, and Andrew’s passion for Italian food has only grown since then. Today, he continues to share that passion with the people of Kelowna and beyond.
