High streamflow advisory, flood warning issued in the Northern Interior

Residents travelling through the Interior and Caribou should be aware of some rising water in area rivers.

According to the River Forecast Centre, a high streamflow advisory is in effect for the San Jose River, Baker Creek, West Road River and tributaries around Quesnel, Williams Lake and Prince George.

"A high-pressure ridge has set up across British Columbia and the maximum temperatures in the above region have reached 21 degree Celsius yesterday, even though the minimum temperatures did not rise as much as expected," wrote the centre. "The streamflows in these rivers have observed responses to the hot spell, which has produced significant amounts of snowmelt."

"The current hydrologic modelling indicates that the river levels in this region continue to rise on the weekend into early next week and are expected to peak next Tuesday. The peaks vary from 5- to 50-year return periods."

Additionally, a flood warning is in place for the Nazko River.

"Hot temperatures in the Nazko River basin and adjacent areas last week and Saturday have incurred significant amounts of snowmelt that resulted in bank full water levels in the Nazko River, which are threatening the local communities according to a report to EMBC."

It is estimated that the Nazko River is currently running at 65 cubic metres per second. That is expected to increase 130 cubic metres per second next week.

With snowpacks starting to melt, the BC Government is asking residents to prepare for spring flooding. Those in high-risk areas are urged to learn how to protect themselves.
